| Regular Homework |
I will try to remain as consistent as possible with the homework routine.
The planned homework routine is as follows:
Monday – Thursday: Your child will bring home their reading homework, along with a math review page. Please make sure you sign your child’s homework reading log every night it is brought home, and always keep the stories read in the plastic pocket. It is also important that the BEE Book and all materials/papers get returned the very next school day as we use these items in the classroom.
· Friday : Your child will be bringing home their reading binders with a book of their choice or a book that matches his/her AR level and a math review page.
| B.E.E. Book |
Your child has a binder known as their “B.E.E. Book” (Bring Everything Everyday). This will come home every day. Monday through Thursday your child will have a reading assignment and Friday’s will be set aside for a free read of a book of choice or one that matches their AR level. After you have read the night’s story, please sign the homework reading log so I know your child has completed the reading assignment. Please return the homework log and binder the next school day. The B.E.E. Book contents are listed below:
Money and Notes Pouch
This pencil pouch will house notes “for the teacher” and notes “for parents” – it is also an ideal place to put money for book orders, lunch, milk and field trips.
Green Folder
Newsletters, school notes, field trip permission slips, homework and monthly calendars will be placed in the green folder. The labels on the folder’s pockets indicate if the paperwork is to be filled out and returned to school or if it needs to be kept at home.
Reading Pouch
Each day your child will take a book home to read for homework. These books will be placed in your child’s reading pouch when the homework is not from the reading book. Books should be returned the very next school day. Books that are lost, damaged or not returned will result in a $5.00 (per book) fee.
Contacts Page
Ways to contact me and other staff members will be shared on the contacts page. Please keep the contacts page in the Bee book. It will be updated, if necessary, during the course of the year.
Specials Schedule
A class list and schedule will also be kept in the Bee book for you to reference, when needed. Our specials, lunch and recess times are indicated on the schedule.
Homework Reading Log
Each week you will receive a Homework Reading Log to be filled out daily. The back of this sheet informs you of what your child is expected to read each night.
Weekly Homework
Each week the children receive a new sheet with the lesson’s words to practice for Friday’s test. There is also a double sided homework sheet to be completed during the course of the week which will be collected on Friday. It is best to work on one section of the homework sheet each night.
The Green Folder
| Your child has a designated folder known as his or her “Take Home” folder, or the “Green Folder” in his/her B.E.E. Book. Please check this folder every night for any homework or notes. Anything to be returned to school should come back in this folder. It is very important that this folder comes to school with your child each day and remains inside of the B.E.E. Book. |
| The Red Folder |
| Your child has a designated folder known as his or her “Friday Folder” or the “Red Folder”. Please check your child’s backpack for this folder every Friday, as all graded work from the week will be in this folder. Your child’s tests will also be placed in this folder. If your child’s test should have a parent signature stamp on it, please sign the test and return it to school the following school day in this folder. Please take time to review and go over your child’s weekly work, then sign the red folder log and return. |
| Accelerated Reader (A.R.) |
During the course of the school year, your child will be given a STAR Reading Exam which will place him/her with an appropriate reading level (known as your child’s AR level). Once your child has been assigned an AR level, he/she will begin bringing home books to read. Each AR book has a comprehension based quiz on the internet for your child to take once done reading the book. I encourage all children to read their AR book at least three times before taking an AR test. It is known that repeated readings build fluency, promote student confidence and improve comprehension.
| Snack |
| Children learn best when they are not hungry; therefore, the children will be given a ten minute snack break each afternoon. Please send a healthy snack and drink to school with your child. Some snack suggestions are sliced vegetables, fruit cups, cereal bars, fruit roll-ups, crackers and cheese, fresh fruit, etc. Pop, candy, cookies and chips are not considered healthy snacks. Remember to pack your child’s snack in a separate container other than their lunch bag. |
| Star Student of the Week |
| Each student will have a chance to be our “Star Student”. During your child’s week, your child will be the focus of several activities that will help our class learn more about each other. Your child’s poster will be displayed in our classroom and they will give a short presentation about their poster. These posters will return home with the student once their week is over. Thank you for your help and cooperation! |
| Scholastic Book Clubs |
| In order for your child to be exposed to the best of children’s literature, each month your child will be bringing home a Scholastic Book Club order form. Because the book prices are so reasonable, I feel it is worth offering them to those families who wish to participate; however, participation is optional. Scholastic books offer wonderful, current literature as well as a large selection of easy and beginning reader books. If you choose to participate, please keep in mind that all payments must be made in the form of a check or money order made payable to Scholastic. Be sure to include your child’s name on the order form and send it in by the specified date as all orders will be placed on that date. I cannot place an order for you before you pay. Please know that when you order from Scholastic Book Clubs, Scholastic rewards our classroom with books for our classroom library. Look for the opportunity monthly! |
